Starting a New Minnesota CBC

Questions, requests for help, and all materials should be submitted to the coordinator.

  • Review the compiler materials on the National Audubon Society's web page.
  • Before starting a new count, consider re-activating a historic count. Go to the locations page to find current and historic locations.
  • Define a center point for your census circle. The census circle is 15 miles in diameter and cannot overlap any existing circle. The circle may extend into neighboring states, however, it complicates the census as the compiler and participants will need to keep a tally for each state.
  • Once your center point is defined, determine the longitude and lattitude of the center point (a useful reference is the MOU latitude and longitude tool, use the GPS coordinates e.g. GPS = 46.01222, -94.26270), create a textual description of the center point (e.g. at the intersection of county road 1 and county road 2 4 miles SSE of Madeup, Minnesota), and if possible draw the circle on a detailed paper map such as a a page of a Delorme topogaphical atlas or a county map with a compass.
  • Submit the above materials to the coordinator along with your contact information.
  • Your count can be recognized by Audubon as an "Official" CBC by following the steps at the AUDUBON CBC Web Site. If you choose to have the count data submitted to the MOU only, or cannot get your count registered in time to meet the Audubon guidelines, I encourage you to continue with your count coordinating efforts by follow the guidelines listed below. If you have any questions, or need assistance, please contact the current MOU CBC Coordinator.
