This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, December 6,
2007 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Snow cover in the north is pretty well complete, but the snow has fallen
very nicely with little wind so there are not very many big drifts
leaving an even cover. Roads are mostly in good winter driving condition
as of this writing.

A late YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen for at least two days from
December 1, at the feeders of Tom Smith in Otter Tail County. Tom
reported that he seemed a little confused by the snow! Alma Ronningen
reported AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, a RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD,
and COMMON REDPOLL. Amy Drake at Richville had RUFFED GROUSE, a MOURNING
DOVE, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, and BOHEMIAN WAXWING.

Two VARIED THRUSHES were reported by Wayne Brininger in Becker County.
One was seen at the headquarters feeders at Tamarac NWR on December 3.
This bird has not been seen since, but Wayne received another report of
a VARIED THRUSH near Big Sugar Bush Lake about 10 miles NW of the refuge
on December 4. On the 6th, yet another VARIED THRUSH was reported by
Frank Kennedy at McCraney Lake 10 miles east of Waubun.

In Red Lake County, Shelley Steva saw SNOW BUNTINGS and LAPLAND
LONGSPURS in Red Lake County on December 4.

Around dusk on December 4, Shelley Steva saw an immature SHARP-SHINNED
HAWK dart across the highway near the Holiday Station in Thief River
Falls in Pennington County.

Another late bird was seen by Steve Broten in Marshall County when he
saw a (presumably) WESTERN MEADOWLARK four miles south of Old Mill State
Park on December 2.

Dave Carman in Bemidji, Beltrami County, reported a late immature
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK in northwest Bemidji on November 30. Mary Lou
Marchand saw a BROWN CREEPER in her yard on December 6.

Kelly Larson near Bagley in Clearwater County reported a lone
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW near her feeders, while BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES and
COMMON RAVENS feasted on her deer rib feeder. Other species seen in the
yard on December 5 included PINE GROSBEAKS, PINE SISKINS, COMMON
REDPOLL, and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH.

At his cabin near Lancaster, Kittson County, Larry Wilebski reported 3
WILD TURKEYS, 7 BLUE JAYS, a BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, and 11 PINE GROSBEAKS
on December 2.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at ajjoppru at wiktel.com OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
