Both yesterday Sunday and again this morning Monday Nov. 12 there has
been a Black Scoter present behind the statutes of Paul and Babe the
Blue Ox on the waterfront in Bemidji off Library Park. The bird is an
immature with the white facial disk, black crown and nape and knobless
bill of an immature. There is a great deal of white on the underparts
visible when the bird dives, which it frequently does. It is in with a
few Scaup, very few for this time of year, and many Common Goldeneyes
and Common Mergansers. It is about the size of the goldeneyes. At
least one other local birder has been able to see it today. It engages
in a fair amount of front head thrusting before it dives. The
White-winged Scoter found Saturday is also still present but about 500
meters to the south east behind the Hampton Inn on the lake and visible
from the public landing next to the hotel.
