We are flirting with snow these days, but so far no measurable amount
has fallen. Owls are starting to be seen in the area, so be on the
lookout. Most winter finches have showed up in one location or another
also.

An injured BOREAL OWL was turned in to Ryan Sansness at Lake Carlos
State Park in Douglas County this week. There is no word on how the owl
is doing, but this is a very unusual record.

>From Kittson County, Larry Wilebski has reported two SNOWY OWLS – on
November 10, one was at his cabin northwest of Lancaster, and on the
11th, another was found a mile west and a mile north of Orleans in
northwest Kittson County. Ben Fritchman , Dedrick Benz, and John Hockema
found a SURF SCOTER from the lookout at the Twin Lakes WMA. Other
species observed by Larry Wilebski on his property included GRAY
PARTRIDGE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, SNOW BUNTINGS, PINE
GROSBEAKS, and PINE SISKINS.

Doug Johnson spotted a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER and a SURF SCOTER among the
COMMON GOLDENEYES on Lake Bemidji on November 10. On November 12, a
BLACK SCOTER was seen off shore near Babe the Blue Ox in downtown
Bemidji. Other waterfowl present this week included scaup, BUFFLEHEAD,
and COMMON MERGANSER.

Kelly Larson in Clearwater County reported RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, BROWN
CREEPER, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, FOX SPARROW, PINE GROSBEAKS, and EVENING
GROSBEAKS at her place near Bagley.

Lyle and Sally Lauber at Dixon Lake in western Itasca County had lots of
winter species at their feeders including all of the species seen by
Kelly Larson in Clearwater County.

Maggie Anderson reported a SNOWY OWL seen just north of the Thief Bay
Bridge within Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Marshall County on
November 14. She also reported that there were BALD EAGLES, ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS, some GADWALLS, and more than the usual number of NORTHERN SHRIKES
at the refuge this week. On November 15, another SNOWY OWL was seen at
the north end of Parker Pool.

Donna and Leon Thoreson observed two EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES in Climax,
Polk County on November 9. At their farm nearby, they saw BALD EAGLE,
and RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH among other species. On November 14 a
SWAINSON'S THRUSH appeared at their feeders a mile north of CR 45, west
of Eldred on CR 222.

On November 11, Ben Fritchman , and several others, saw a WOOD THRUSH
near the intersection of S. Elm Street and South River Road off 9th Ave
S., Moorhead, Clay County. On November 13, Dean Reimer found a
TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE a block north of the wood thrush location.

John Ellis reported a SMITH'S LONGSPUR in Wilkin County on November 10
along 200St between 280th and 300th Ave. Other species seen included
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and SNOW BUNTINGS.

At Lake Carlos State Park in Douglas County, Ryan Sansness reported that
the park feeders are hosting PILEATED WOODPECKERS and RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCHES among other species.

Thanks to Ben Fritchman, Donna and Leon Thoreson, Doug Johnson, John
Ellis, Kelly Larson, Larry Wilebski, Lyle and Sally Lauber, Maggie
Anderson, Patrick Beauzay, and Ryan Sansness for their reports.
