This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, November
29, 2007 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce.
You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or

There is no doubt about the season as the temperatures have dipped below
zero during the last week. The first snow cover has also arrived in the
northwest with regions receiving varying amounts ranging from a dusting
to perhaps 4 inches. Skies clear between snowfalls, and so far the wind
has been tolerable, but as I write this, a wind chill advisory has been
issued for tonight. Bird activity has been minimal during the last few
days; most birds reported have been at feeders.

One rather unusual sighting was that of an unidentified eider spotted by
Ben Wieland on Shingobee Bay on Leech Lake a few miles north of Walker
in Cass County on November 28. The bird was seen a few miles north of
Walker about 1-2 miles north of the MN 200/Mn 371 intersection. It was
not relocated later in the day but may still be around.

A SNOWY OWL was seen in Roseau County on November 26 near the
intersection of the main dike road with CR 3. The bird was reported by
Stan Wood, manager at the Roseau River WMA, but apparently had been seen
in the area since November 8. Also in Roseau County, Beth Siverhus
reported waxwing species, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE near their house in
Warroad.

Mary Lou Marchand in Bemidji, Beltrami County, reported RED-BELLIED
WOODPECKER, HAIRY WOODPECKER, and DOWNY WOODPECKER, at her feeders on
November 28. A pair of NORTHERN CARDINALS has been present for two
weeks, while PINE SISKINS appeared on November 18. Other species
included HOUSE FINCH and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH. Kelly Larson saw a lone
swan on the ice of Lake Bemidji on November 28.

In Clearwater County, Kelly Larson, near Bagley, reported 3 ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS, NORTHERN SHRIKE, a BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, and a few EVENING
GROSBEAKS this week.

>From Becker County, Wayne Brininger reported 8 PINE GROSBEAKS at Tamarac
NWR headquarters on November 28. Other species seen lately on the refuge
include NORTHERN SHRIKE, COMMON REDPOLLS, and EVENING GROSBEAKS.

Thanks to Ben Wieland, Beth Siverhus, Kelly Larson, Mary Lou Marchand,
Stan Wood, and Wayne Brininger for their reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at ajjoppru at wiktel.com OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, December 6,
2007.
