[mou] state fair question

Hi all,

Jill, my wife, and I did two shifts at the state fair today, one because I was scheduled to, and the second because I had so much fun that we wanted to stay.

We did the first shift with Sharon Stiteler, and that was so much fun, that when Don Mitchell showed up to relieve us and I found out he was alone, we stayed.

We got some real good questions, like how to get rid of Starlings, to how to attract owls to someone's yard, and almost everyone was friendly. We did have one inebriated appearing woman who asked us to tell her "all about hawks", and she got angry when we asked her to be more specific. There were quite a few people that really knew some things about birds, including one young boy, who had quite a list going, and whom I personally told to keep birding and that he was on to an activity that he would only get better at and get more enjoyment out of.

All in all it was very enjoyable and something that I would do again. If one gets there early enough, you can even find a free place to park, which we did.

I also got to meet Dave Cahlander and to put faces to some of the names on this list, including Sharon and Don.

We didn't see any species of note, other than a Rock Pigeon, although I did get fooled a couple of times by Sharon's IPod.

Good birding,
Richard

Gordon Andersson and I did the afternoon shift at the fair. It was a great day. We had lots of good interaction with the public and handed out almost a full box of magazines.
One question stumped us both.
We were asked about a bird that calls only at night, gives one call and then is silent. The location is a woody area far from a lake or wetlands, somewhere in mid-Minnesota.

Does anyone know of such a thing.
We guessed frogs, insects but the fair goer insisted that it was a bird call.

Oh no, not another learning experience!
