This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, September
27, 2007 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Leaves are coming down fast with the cool, damp, windy conditions we
have had in the northwest this week. Fall colors are everywhere, but
won't last long if the weather continues as it has been. Waterfowl
migration is really increasing, and the waterfowl hunting season begins
this weekend. Please be aware of that and be careful.

Tom Smith in Otter Tail County reported HARRIS'S SPARROW and DARK-EYED
JUNCO at the feeder on September 27.

In Pennington County, the Thief River Falls wastewater treatment ponds
are hosting increasing numbers of waterfowl including several SNOW
GEESE, many CANADA GEESE, one TUNDRA SWAN, and an assortment of ducks.
With the hunting season opening, I expect the numbers to increase there
this weekend. Elsewhere in the county, a NORTHERN HARRIER was seen near
MN 1 west of Thief River Falls on Thursday. Here in our yard there has
been an increase in WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, PURPLE FINCH, and AMERICAN
GOLDFINCH. The latter are rapidly losing the beautiful yellow color
which has been replaced by a scruffy yellow-gray, soon to be a lovely
muted gray.

>From Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Marshall County, Gary Tischer
reported a single ROSS'S GOOSE which has been present since September 17
along CR 7, most recently seen on September 27 at South Pool. 25 SNOW
GEESE, more than 2000 CANADA GEESE, a few diving ducks, 30000 dabbling
ducks of several species, 30-35 GREAT EGRETS, a BELTED KINGFISHER at the
Ditch 11 control structure, and AMERICAN BITTERNS are being seen at the
refuge. About 500 SANDHILL CRANES, down from about 900, are still at
Agassiz. Starting on October 1, no gate keys will be issued to the
public due to the beginning of the waterfowl hunting season this
weekend.

Thanks to Gary Tischer and Tom Smith for their reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at ajjoppru at wiktel.com OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, October 4,
2007.
