4/2/08, SaxZim Bog. 9am-2pm.
12 Hawks (roughlegged and redtailed), observed one beautiful dark morph
roughlegged hover hunting near Sax Rd.
3 Northern Shrikes (Mcdavitt, Stonelake, and Admiral Rd.)
3 Gray Jays (Admiral Rd.)
1 Boreal Chickadee (Admiral Rd.) First time ever hearing one sing, not the
nasal call, but a flute like song, one syllable repeated 4 to 5 times,
striking in comparison to the blackcapped song.
Searched for several hours but turned up zero blackbacked or american three
toed woodpeckers.
2 river otters in the culvert off Hwy 7 right near stone lake rd. :)
1 kestrel- male, off Hwy 33 right near the junction with Hwy 7.
1 northern harrier, male, very near Hwy 33.
2 Turkey Vultures in Gary, Duluth.
Double digit american robins and grackles today and yesterday in West Duluth.
And lastly, a late report from last Friday, two trumpeter swans feeding with
other waterfowl near the power plant at 40th avenue west in Duluth.
Presumably the same swans as reported by Sparky Stensaas as one of the swans clearly
had a yellow neck tag.
Happy Birding. Shawn Zierman.
