There are signs of spring this week with reports of migrants starting to
come in and owls beginning to be heard hooting. Pleasant weather has
allowed some movement of birds and let humans get outside without
freezing.

John Ellis reported a flock of GRAY PARTRIDGE in Douglas County on
Thoennes Lane east of CR 12 on February 23. Other species seen in the
county included ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, two MOURNING DOVES, NORTHERN SHRIKE,
and HORNED LARKS.

In Otter Tail County, Joan Burke found a SNOWY OWL on East Lake Lizzie
Road two miles south of US 59 on February 24. Several TRUMPETER SWANS
can be seen on the Pelican River. Amy Drake reported HORNED LARKS and
SNOW BUNTINGS on February 22; and the first AMERICAN ROBIN on February
24. Three COMMON RAVENS were seen four miles north of Ottertail, and an
AMERICAN KESTREL, three miles east of the intersection of CR 108 and CR
61. Alma Ronningen saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE on February 25. She also
reported 25 WILD TURKEYS, a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, and AMERICAN TREE
SPARROW. Kelly Blackledge reported that two EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES have
been visiting the yard of Dan and Monique Fischer since February 1.

Nate Emery counted around 400 GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS and 50
SHARP-TAILED GROUSE in the Glacial Ridge area of Polk County on February
23. Other species seen included ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, COMMON RAVEN, HORNED
LARKS, AMERICAN ROBIN, and COMMON REDPOLL. On February 28, Nate found a
SNOWY OWL along CR 46 3 miles south of US 2. A BALD EAGLE was seen on CR
45 three miles east of MN 32. Bruce Flaig reported a NORTHERN SAW-WHET
OWL in his yard in the southern part of the county on February 25. Donna
and Leon Thoreson are still feeding 30-50 SNOW BUNTINGS at their farm
near Climax. They reported a flock of 10 GRAY PARTRIDGE near MN 220
south of CR 9. At their feeder, they also have 4 DARK-EYED JUNCOS and a
NORTHERN SHRIKE which visits occasionally.

In Pennington County, Shelley Steva and I saw a MERLIN zip across US 59
near the Holiday Station in Thief River Falls on February 24. Linda Timm
reported hearing a GREAT HORNED OWL hooting just outside their window a
few miles west of Thief River Falls on February 26.

On February 24, we counted 155 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE in Marshall County. A
few SNOW BUNTINGS were seen, and at a farmyard just west of the
intersection of CR 6 with US 59 , there were 13 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS.

In Kittson County on February 24, we observed four BALD EAGLES, two of
which were at a nest along CR 22 west of Lake Bronson in Hazelton
Township. 140 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were found in Lake Bronson, and 30 in
Karlstad. Other species seen included two HORNED LARKS, and at Larry
Wilebski's cabin there were GRAY JAY, PINE GROSBEAK, COMMON REDPOLL,
PINE SISKIN, and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH. Larry also reported a NORTHERN
GOSHAWK northwest of Lancaster, GREAT HORNED OWL, a SHORT-EARED OWL just
west of the intersection of CR 8/ US 59, and BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE. He
also has seen WILD TURKEY, RUFFED GROUSE, and SHARP-TAILED GROUSE on his
property.

Thanks to Alma Ronningen, Amy Drake, Bruce Flaig, Joan Burke, John
Ellis, Kelly Blackledge, Larry Wilebski, Linda Timm, Nathaniel Emery,
