Last evening I took a birder from the East to the sedge marsh on Swamp Lake,
Rte 371, northwestern Cass County. We found one yellow rail, finally
managing to "click" it into view after a couple of frustrating, damp,
mosquito-ridden hours. It was his 677th life US bird, ending a long run of
failed attempts. This bird was the only yellow rail we heard calling there
over a 3-hour period. In the general area there were also other birds of
interest, including an American bittern, sora and virginia rails, Wilson's
snipe, Nelson's sharp-tailed sparrow, and merlin. It had been many years
since I'd heard the calls of several of these species, so it was fun to
re-familiarize myself with them.
