This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, May 15,

As weather warms up, the pent up migration is breaking loose, and every
day brings new species to the northwest. Leaves are still not big enough
on the trees to obscure vision and it appears that the spring birding
will be fast and furious for the next couple of weeks. There are reports
of all sorts of species from all over the area .

Donna and Leon Thoreson in Polk County found a PIPING PLOVER near
Crookston on May 8, and reported a CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR in Tilden
Township near the Glacial Ridge NWR on May 11.

In Roseau County, Beth Siverhus observed WESTERN GREBE, SPOTTED
SANDPIPER, MARBLED GODWIT, PURPLE MARTIN, BROWN THRASHER, and PURPLE
FINCH on May 9, and CASPIAN TERN on May 10. Among many others on May 13,
she saw COOPER'S HAWK and BROWN CREEPER.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County reported an OVENBIRD among the many
species that have arrived so far. He also observed a small flock of SNOW
BUNTINGS this week.

Pat DeWenter in Bemidji, Beltrami County, saw an EARED GREBE and CAPE
MAY WARBLER on May 9, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and BALTIMORE ORIOLE on
May 13. Pat Rice reported the first RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD on May 12.
Doug Johnson reported FORSTER'S TERN, TENNESSEE WARBLER, MOURNING
WARBLER,WILSON'S WARBLER, and HARRIS'S SPARROW this week.

In Marshall County, Jennifer Audette saw a WILD TURKEY along CR 2
between 130th and 140th Ave NW on May 8. At Agassiz NWR on May 9, Pat
Roth observed 4 AMERICAN BITTERNS, an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, and a
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET. I counted 190 HORNED GREBES on Headquarters Pool
on May 10. Dana Jenkins had a visit from a PILEATED WOODPECKER at their
home near Newfolden on May 14. Arlyne Johnson saw a PRAIRIE FALCON near
Grygla on May 13.

Surprise visitor to our feeder near Thief River Falls in Pennington
County tonight was a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH. Several PINE SISKINS were
also there , while 3 RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS fought over access to
the nectar. Keith Wheeler reported an EASTERN TOWHEE on May 11.

Shelley Steva found a PINE SISKIN in Red Lake County on May 9, while Al
Walker saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER in Red Lake Falls on May 12. At the
Red Lake Falls WTP on May 11, I found 39 very excited BUFFLEHEADS, 6
RUDDY DUCKS, and about 200 FRANKLIN'S GULLS, and at least one BOBOLINK .
At Huot Old Treaty Crossing, there were two BROWN CREEPERS, and two
EASTERN TOWHEES that day.

Nathaniel Emery in Polk County sent in a long list of arriving species
this week including GREEN HERON, PEREGRINE FALCON, GOLDEN EAGLE, GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, MARBLED GODWIT, WILSON'S PHALAROPE,
HERMIT THRUSH, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, SEDGE WREN, MARSH WREN, LAPLAND
LONGSPUR, and BOBOLINK. One brood of CANADA GEESE was seen. He saw a
WILLET and AMERICAN PIPIT on May 15 in Tilden Township.

Connie Norheim was birding at Felton Prairie on May 9 where she found
UPLAND SANDPIPER, SEDGE WREN, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, and
BROWN THRASHER. Near Hitterdahl, she saw RED-NECKED GREBE, and SORA. Mel
and Elaine Bennefeld saw a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD on May 13 at the
Ponderosa Golf Club.

In Detroit Lakes, Becker County, Beau Shroyer has a RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER visiting his home . On May 13 there was a good fallout of
warblers in Detroit Lakes as he was able to tally 13 species in two
hours. Other species seen included CASPIAN TERN, empidonax flycatchers,
and on May 14, an INDIGO BUNTING.

In Otter Tail County, Brad and Dee Ehlers reported sighting a COOPER'S
HAWK, and GRAY CATBIRD on May 10. Dan and Sandy Thimgan reported
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, LEAST
SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, STILT SANDPIPER, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER,
and WILSON'S PHALAROPE on May 10. On the 15th, they added GREEN HERON,
VIRGINIA RAIL, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER and COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT. Amy Drake added WILSON'S WARBLER and AMERICAN REDSTART on
May 13.

Sheri Johnson reported a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD in Walker in Cass
County on May 11.

In addition, there were many reports of all the common ducks, all the
grebes , AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, all the swallows, BROWN CREEPER,
EASTERN BLUEBIRD, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, YELLOW
WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, PALM
WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, OVENBIRD, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH,
AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, CHIPPING SPARROW, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, VESPER
SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROW, FOX SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW,
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD,
BALTIMORE ORIOLE, and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH throughout the northwest.
