This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, May 29,
2008 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You

Leaves are struggling to expand and grow in the northwest, but rain
received on Thursday will surely help. Warmer temperatures will also
help. Woods are carpeted with wildflowers, and wild fruit trees are all
in blossom. Migration is winding down, but the warblers have finally
arrived and are not expected to stick around for long, as it is late
already.

Martin Kehoe, Cindi McDougall , and Jenny Moorman did a Big Day in Lake
of the Woods County on May 24. Among the species seen were 16
SHARP-TAILED GROUSE on a lek along CR 75, and COMMON TERN, CASPIAN TERN,
and WINTER WREN at Zippel Bay SP. A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was among the
list of 17 warbler species seen in the county.

Steve Patterson reported an INDIGO BUNTING on the north side of Lake
Bemidji in Beltrami County on May 25, and a SCARLET TANAGER on the shore
of Big Turtle Lake on May 28. On May 29 I saw a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER
at the Big Bog SRA; PALM WARBLER and MOURNING WARBLER were among the
warblers seen .

On May 26, four of us did a Big Day in Clearwater County where we found
122 species during a difficult, cold misty day. We found good numbers of
warblers in the morning at Itasca SP including BAY-BREASTED WARBLER and
MOURNING WARBLER. Other species of note included RUDDY DUCK, 42 WILSON'S
PHALAROPES, and 3 CASPIAN TERNS at the Clearbrook WTP, a DICKCISSEL a
few miles northwest of Bagley, and EVENING GROSBEAKS at Bert's cabins at
Itasca SP. On May 29, Pat DeWenter found 13 warbler species at Itasca SP
including GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER. Also seen was a HERMIT THRUSH. Kelly
Larson reported GREEN HERONS on May 26 at the farm; at Sandy Lake she

nesting GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN, SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, NORTHERN

with two colts on May 26. Other species seen included SAVANNAH SPARROW,
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, LE CONTE'S SPARROW, and BOBOLINK. On May 28, there
were two BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, and 13 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS at
