This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, November
13, 2008 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce.
You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or
1-800-433-1888.

Snow has started to appear in some places in the northwest, but as yet
there is no general cover. Weather continues to be somewhat unpleasant,
windy, and raw, and one needs to watch for ice when it gets below
freezing these days.

A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was found by Patty Thielen and Ted Dick on November
10, just south of Baudette in Lake of the Woods County near the north
boundary of the Carp Swamp WMA.

Maggie Anderson at Agassiz NWR in Marshall County reported a COMMON LOON
in a small patch of water south of CR 7 leading one to wonder if it will
be able to leave. Two WESTERN GREBES and a RED-NECKED GREBE were there
recently but have left now, and most of the pools are iced up.

In Pennington County, I found 5 LONG-TAILED DUCKS at the Thief River
Falls wastewater treatment ponds on November 8. This would be a first
county record if accepted. Four of them were relocated on November 9,
but at that time all but one cell was completely frozen over. Among
other species seen there were REDHEAD, BUFFLEHEAD, HOODED MERGANSERS,
COMMON MERGANSERS, and a PEREGRINE FALCON. Shelley Steva saw a COOPER'S
HAWK fly over a Thief River Falls street on November 9.

In Red Lake County on November 10, Shelley Steve saw a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK
3/4 of a mile east of Plummer.

Karen Suldahl in Climax , Polk County, had a visit from a PINE GROSBEAK
on November 8. 75 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were spotted by Shelley Steva on
November 9 in Polk County. Donna and Leon Thoreson who live near Climax
reported a BALD EAGLE feeding on their deer carcass. Other species in
their yard included one LINCOLN'S SPARROW, a HARRIS'S SPARROW, one
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, a RUSTY BLACKBIRD, PINE SISKINS, and the first
COMMON REDPOLL of the season.

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was spotted by Rick Gjervold west of the Crystal Sugar
Beet plant in north Moorhead, Clay County, on November 9.

>From Otter Tail County Jeff Schultz reported a small flock of
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at Thumper Pond Golf Course along the cart path
accessed from the west side of the clubhouse. Dan and Sandy Thimgan
still have RUSTY BLACKB IRDS in their yard, and on November 11, they had
the first COMMON REDPOLLS, and many PINE SISKINS.

Thanks to Donna and Leon Thoreson, Dan and Sandy Thimgan, Jeff Schultz,
Karen Suldahl, Maggie Anderson, Patty Thielen, Ted Dick, Rick Gjervold,
and Shelley Steva for their reports.
