This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, October 16,
2008 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Colors are wonderful in the northwest now, but the first really cold
night and strong wind will bring down the curtain of fall. Migration is
continuing, and we are seeing increasing numbers of summer residents on
their way north.

A VARIED THRUSH was reported by Dennis Weisenborn on October 11 in
Moorhead, Clay County. The location was the Minnesota side of the Red
River of the North across from Jack Williams Stadium. The bird was
feeding on wild grapes on the river bank in an area accessible to the
public. I have no information as to whether the bird has been seen
again.

Here in Pennington County, on October 12, there was a large influx of
migrating AMERICAN ROBINS and DARK-EYED JUNCOS. Also present in our yard
were reduced numbers of WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, and many PURPLE FINCHES
and PINE SISKINS.

Scott Kahan reported that GREAT EGRETS were still present on Anderson
WPA adjoining Hamden Slough NWR on October 10. Many waterfowl and a few
shorebirds were seen at Hamden Slough NWR.

Thanks to Dennis Weisenborn, and Scott Kahan for their reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at ajjoppru at wiktel.com OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, October 23,
2008.
