Short-eared Owl in St. Louis County
2010-09-27

Uncommon in St. Louis County in the Fall season

Composite image of Short-eared Owl flying over Lake Superior at 5:15 PM on 27 September 2010. This species is more than capable of flying over large bodies of water and a few are seen migrating over Lake Superior almost every fall. Curiously, this individual flew from the Superior Entry towards the Port Terminal in Duluth instead of the other way around. It was first spotted over the lighthouse at the tip of Wisconsin Point, where it was being pursued by Ring-billed and Herring gulls. It flew northwest over the lake before crossing Park Point in the vicinity of the Duluth Rowing Club. Observed from the dune bridge near the Park Point Recreation Area by Sue Plankis and Peder H. Svingen.
