Mute Swan(Cygnus olor)
YearSeasonNS
1974Spring On 5-9 B. Hojnacki observed 3 swan of this species with 18 Tundra Swan in Lake Superior near Ashland, Wis. Possibly the same birds were observed near Duluth on 5-26 & 27 with 1 Whistling Swan by R. Fox & JCG (First state record).
1974Summer Three still present on 6-2 in the St. Louis R. in Duluth with Whistling Swans (D. Olson); if wild, these would represent a first state record; Mute Swans occur in good numbers in the wild in Michigan and strays have occurred several times on the Wisconsin and Illinois side of L. Michigan; these same three swans apparently wandered during 1974 on L. Superior to Wisconsin and Ontario.
1974Winter The most inconsiderate birds of the year were three Mute Swans which showed up at Grand Marais, Cook Co. on 1-27-the day after the M.O.U. winter trip; they remained here until mid-February; second state record.
1975Spring 2 reports: 3-8 Cook (Grand Marais) MMC; 3-14 & 3-16 Cook (Grand Marais) PVK & ETS.
1980Spring Many reports from St. Louis and Lake counties 3-8 (2), 3-16 (7), 3-25 (2) sp?, 3-30 (5), 5-23 (1) sp?, 5-31 (1), several observers.
1981Spring Several reports from Duluth: 3-15 (7) fide KE, 4-18 JG and 5-11 KE; also 3-20 through 28 ltascat TL.
1982Fall 10/20 to 11/11 Duluth, JB, KE, many obs. On Lake Superior this species is presumed wild, probably wandering from a feral colony at Ashland, Wisconsin; elsewhere in Minnesota it would be presumed an escaped captive.
1983Spring 3/24 to 26 Duluth KE, others.
1984Spring 4/24 to 4/26 Duluth KE.
1986Spring 4/l-9 Duluth KE, m.ob.

It is possible and perhaps likely that the Wabasha and Dakota birds were the same. Prairie Island Casino (Goodhue) origin of at least some of this area's Mute Swans has been suspected in past years, but GJM (Prairie Island Indian Community conservation biologist) reported that one member of the last Casino pair died in June 2013 and its mate was last reported in fall 2013, and there have been no further Mute Swan reports from Prairie Island since.
