55:411982-06-04DuluthSt. Louis(vote 1-6) Although the description of the wing pattern suggested Sabine's Gull, this description was somewhat vague and did not entirely rule out a sub-adult Bonaparte 's. The head color was described as gray, but some Bonaparte's also show a gray rather than black head. Finally, this gull was seen standing at close range, but there was no mention of the yellow bill tip which should have been obvious under those conditions. Not Accepted

71:1561998-09-06Big Cormorant L.Becker(record #98-81, vote 0-7). Although the description of the wing pattern seems to be diagnostic, the described colors of the head and secondary coverts are not consistent with a juvenile Sabine's. Since the tail “had a terminal black band,” this individual was a juvenile, and in this plumage a Sabine's crown, ear coverts and nape are a uniform grayish brown (the head is not “dirty white with a gray ear-spot”), and the secondary coverts are similarly grayish brown (and not “dark gray” as described). Those voting against the above two records were concerned about the description of molt and plumage, as most Sabine's Gulls do not acquire basic plumage until after reaching their winter quarters. Since the observer had no prior experience with Sabine's Gull and since not all other species of gull were considered and eliminated, it was felt that photographs or verification by other observers would be needed to confirm the identification.
