Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our birding friends! Due to the Christmas holiday , and the busy whirl of activities, few reports came in this week. The snow arrived just in time for Christmas and we have had lovely weather for the last few days.

In Hubbard County the Itasca State Park CBC reported a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER along the snowmobile trail where it enters Itasca State Park two miles north of the east park entrance, and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK at Lake Alice. GRAY JAY and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were found in Clearwater County near the Mississippi Headwaters. 68 EVENING GROSBEAKS were also found on the count, some in both Hubbard and Clearwater Counties.

In Pennington County, I have both PILEATED WOODPECKER and RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER coming to our feeder. On Christmas morning, there were also WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH.

AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES were also reported by Bert and Marcie Bisson at their feeder in Becker County 10 miles north of Detroit Lakes.

From Ottertail County, Richard Cooper reported several NORTHERN CARDINALS at his feeder all summer and one pair has remained. He is on Fish Lake Road on Pelican Lake. Also in Ottertail County Tom and Sheryl Smith have AMERICAN ROBINS, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, DARK-EYED JUNCO, and AMERICAN TREE SPARROW in their yard.

Thanks to Richard Cooper, Doug Johnson, Tom and Sheryl Smith and Bert and Marcie Bisson for their reports.
