This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, June 13, 2003

Spring migration is definitely over, except for the stragglers. Summer
sights and sounds are taking over, and young birds are appearing. Folks
are apparently doing less birding and more other outdoor activities for
fewer reports have come in this week.
Roland Jordahl had an interesting report from Becker County- there were
two COMMON MOORHENS at the same pond at Hamden Slough on Tuesday, June
10th. Apparently all that chatter that the first bird was making when we
saw him has attracted a mate, or at least a companion. To get there, go
to the Hamden Slough NWR headquarters, then east past the lake and turn
left (north) and go 0.7 mile to a place where there is a lake on the
left and a pond on the right. The birds were in the small pond on the
right.
Wilkin County birds reported by Andrew Longtin included MARBLED GODWIT,
WILSON'S PHALAROPE, and GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN all near the Rothsay
WMA.
In Todd County , Andrew found a pair of SANDHILL CRANES with their colt
in Germania Township west of county ditch 25. Also near there was a
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER. There were WESTERN GREBES on Lake Osakis.
In Marshall County at Agassiz NWR, Kari Odefey reported that the
shorebird count is way down, but about 20 MARBLED GODWITS were in Thief
Bay Pool this week and there were some WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, and
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS at Northwest Pool. Soch Lor reports that the
TRUMPETER SWANS nesting at Agassiz hatched 6 cygnets on June 1st. They
were seen by Gary Huschle in Pool 8. In addition, during a morning of
point counts, Gary Huschle and I found 5 YELLOW RAILS in Agassiz Pool.
I'd like to explain how to get there but the area is inaccessible except
by airboat. Two COMMON LOONS were seen by Stephanie Howell in Lost River
Pool . FRANKLIN'S GULLS, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, and AMERICAN COOTS
are hatching out.
Pat Rice took a trip to Blackduck in Beltrami County on June 10th. She
reported CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS and BOBOLINKS along County Road 30. At
the Blackduck wastewater treatment ponds, there were CLIFF SWALLOW,
NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, TREE SWALLOW, PURPLE MARTINS, and CEDAR
WAXWINGS.
Gretchen Mehmel reported two BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS near Norris Camp
in Lake of the Woods County this week, and also a BLUE-HEADED VIREO.
