This has been a cold week, and it is having an effect on both the migrants and the birders. New reports of arriving migrants have dwindled, but somehow the leaves continue to progress, and if the recent frosts do not damage them , we will have leaves by the time the warblers show up.

In Todd County on April 24, Beau Shroyer observed a BROAD-WINGED HAWK near CR 2 and US 71 . Mary Kroll reported a calling NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL from a tamarac bog five miles NE of Long Prairie. Ben Fritchman reported two CATTLE EGRETS in Todd County on April 28. To get to their location, go south from Long Prairie on US 71 to CR 10, then east on CR 10 to CR 11, north on CR 11 for one mile and turn left on a dead end road. The egrets were with the cattle.

Susan Wiste reported CEDAR WAXWINGS and a lingering PINE SISKIN in Douglas County near Alexandria this week.

Bob O'Connor was birding at Felton Prairie in Clay County on April 24. He reported a variety of species including GRAY PARTRIDGE, GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN, COMMON LOON, OSPREY, MARBLED GODWIT, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, BROWN THRASHER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, SAVANNAH SPARROW, SONG SPARROW, and BREWER'S BLACKBIRD.

Shelley Steva was the first to report a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER in Pennington County on April 24.

At Agassiz NWR in Marshall County on April 24, I found BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, HERMIT THRUSH, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, and SWAMP SPARROW among others. A CATTLE EGRET was observed on April 24 by Dave Myhrer 6.5 miles east of Agassiz NWR headquarters. Elsewhere in Marshall County, Dave saw a BOBOLINK northwest of Holt on April 24, and 2500 TUNDRA SWANS were seen six miles NE of Warren. The first LEAST BITTERN of the year at Agassiz was reported by Jay Cuicci on April 24.

In Clearwater County, Pat found thousands of TUNDRA SWANS, 19 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE on a lek along CR 7, five MARBLED GODWITS, SAVANNAH SPARROW, and SONG SPARROW.

Melanie Torkelson reported that a PEREGRINE FALCON was observed at the main dike south of Pool 2 at the Roseau River WMA in Roseau County on the 21st.

Gretchen Mehmel , reporting from Lake of the Woods County on April 23, mentioned SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, MOURNING DOVE, and PURPLE FINCH.
