Another year has passed, and now we can start a new list of species seen. Weather has been strange to us this winter, and there is ice everywhere in the northwest. On highways, much of the ice has melted off in the warm temperatures of recent days, but the same temperatures have brought some rain and at night that all freezes again, so caution is advised , particularly now on the gravel roads.

There is news from Warroad where Dana Klos, Superintendent of Utilities, reported that the city has used the salvageable debris from the summer tornado that hit the city on August 5 to build a 30 foot tall observation mound overlooking Lake of the Woods. They hope to have some landscaping done and signs erected in the spring prior to the prime birding season.

The Baudette CBC in Lake of the Woods County was held on December 31 . Species seen included 38 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 17 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 3 GRAY JAYS, 180 COMMON RAVENS, a BOREAL CHICKADEE, 2 BROWN CREEPERS, 79 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, a LAPLAND LONGSPUR, 504 SNOW BUNTINGS, 101 PINE GROSBEAKS, 2 HOUSE FINCHES, 111 COMMON REDPOLLS, and 19 EVENING GROSBEAKS. The Beltrami Island CBC was held on New Year's Day this year. This Lake of the Woods CBC was very successful as 23 species were seen including 8 RUFFED GROUSE, 2 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS, 6 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 5 BARRED OWLS, 4 NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS, 7 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS, 15 GRAY JAYS, 51 COMMON RAVENS, 9 BOREAL CHICKADEES, a NORTHERN SHRIKE, 27 PINE GROSBEAKS, 10 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, and 242 COMMON REDPOLLS. A GREAT GRAY OWL was seen by Gretchen Mehmel along the Faunce Road east of Norris Camp but outside the count circle.

The Roseau CBC in Roseau County which tallied 29 species was held on December 30. Highlights included 7 RUFFED GROUSE, 33 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, 2 GREAT HORNED OWLS, an AMERICAN KESTREL, 4 NORTHERN SHRIKES, 17 GRAY JAYS, 206 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, 362 SNOW BUNTINGS, a LAPLAND LONGSPUR, 1 RUSTY BLACKBIRD, 110 PINE GROSBEAKS, 4 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, 172 COMMON REDPOLLS, and 4 EVENING GROSBEAKS.

Lately, Diana Morkassel has seen two PINE GROSBEAKS in her yard in Marshall County north of Warren.

Lisa Zluticky, reporting from Waubun in Mahnomen County, saw 30 CEDAR WAXWINGS in the yard on Christmas Day, and on January 3, there were 40 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS there in addition to a FOX SPARROW, and many COMMON REDPOLLS and PINE SISKINS.

Dave Hochhalter reported RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN CARDINAL, and DARK-EYED JUNCOS from Detroit Lakes in Becker County on New Year's Day.

Thanks to Dave Hochhalter, Diana Morkassel, Gretchen Mehmel, and Lisa Zluticky for their reports.
