This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, June 28, 2007 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218) 847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

With all the recent rains, all is green here this June. A few heavy storms brought more rain to part of the area, so conditions are moist, and prairie wildflowers are beautiful all over.

At and around Glacial Ridge NWR, Nathaniel Emery reported that many DICKCISSELS are singing in all the weedy fields this year. A few GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS could be heard still booming at 9 P.M. on June 23 there. Other species seen in that area of Polk County included many UPLAND SANDPIPERS, MARBLED GODWITS, HORNED LARKS, GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, and LE CONTE'S SPARROWS. Danielle Olson at Rydell NWR reported TRUMPETER SWAN, RED-NECKED GREBE, and SCARLET TANAGER among the species reported there this week.

Kim Conway found a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO at Huot in Red Lake County this weekend.

Here in Pennington County, I had a visit from a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER on June 27. I suspect nesting nearby, as this species was at my feeder for quite awhile, then absent for about two weeks, and returned this week. As I write this, a pair of HAIRY WOODPECKERS and a pair of DOWNY WOODPECKERS have brought their young to the suet for a special treat. The RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER also has returned, but no sign of any young yet.

At Agassiz NWR in Marshall County, a family of COMMON LOONS with two chicks is growing fast on Parker Pool. Other species much in evidence on June 22 included nesting RED-NECKED GREBES and a variety of ducks.

Bob Williams found a DICKCISSEL in Clearwater County near the intersection of CR 22 and CR 7 on June 27.

At Norris Camp Picnic area in Lake of the Woods County on June 23, I was able to find the nesting BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS reported earlier. This was not difficult, as the young woodpecker or woodpeckers are nearly ready to fledge, and were very noisy, advertising their location throughout the area. Both adults were actively feeding the young, but I was unable to tell if the young male that dominated the opening had any siblings.

Thanks to Bob Williams, Danielle Olson, Kim Conway, and Nate Emery for their reports.
