This has been a week of sharp temperature contrasts and wind. One day it is very hot, the next quite like fall, and wind seems to be part of most days. Trees are beginning to change and the cool temperatures every morning make us think of the possible frost coming soon.

The big news this week is that the LONG-TAILED JAEGER in Marshall County south of Agassiz NWR was seen by many birders including Kim Eckert's MOU weekend group. However the last sighting was recorded on Sunday, September 2 and the bird appears to have left the area. Coincidentally, an adult LONG-TAILED JAEGER was spotted by a member of Kim's group on Monday, September flying over Springsteel Island near Warroad.

Kim's group found CASPIAN TERN, COMMON TERN, and FORSTER'S TERN in Lake of the Woods County on September 3 among many other species.

In Roseau County, SHORT-EARED OWL, migrating COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, WESTERN KINGBIRD, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, PURPLE MARTIN, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW were among the species seen.

HORNED GREBE, EARED GREBE, VIRGINIA RAIL, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW were among the species seen in Kittson County by the MOU weekend group.

Pat Rice in Beltrami County northeast of Bemidji reported a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW under their feeders on September 5.

With all the eyes that were in the area on the weekend, many species besides the jaeger were reported in Marshall County besides the jaeger, many species were reported . The weekly shorebird survey counted more than 2500 individuals of 20 species including 9 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, a WILLET, one SANDERLING, one WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, more than 900 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, and 8 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS. Kim Eckert's group also located a RUDDY TURNSTONE and a RED KNOT. Most birds were at Tamarac Pool, but the latter two were at South Pool. On Labor Day, Kim and Cindy Risen located the SABINE'S GULL reported by Bill Unzen earlier at Headquarters Pool, and also several RED-NECKED PHALAROPES. Al Schirmacher reported 5 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, and, at the jaeger location , 26 BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES.

In Pennington County, Adele Rosencrans saw an adult BALD EAGLE flying over the Thief River last week near the 8th street bridge. Here in the yard there were migrant warblers on September 6, including TENNESSEE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER. Kim Eckert's group found a PEREGRINE FALCON at the Thief River Falls wastewater treatment ponds.

At her home in Red Lake County near Oklee, Anita Vettleson saw a flock of 50-100 migrating COMMON NIGHTHAWKS which stopped to glean insects on August 30 over her yard. The Minnesota Birding Weekend group observed HORNED GREBE, VIRGINIA RAIL, SORA, 8 species of shorebirds and 9 species of warbler in Red Lake County on August 30.

Mel and Elaine Bennefeld found an OSPREY and a BALD EAGLE at Buffalo River State Park in Clay County on September 4.

Forest Strnad reported this week that Artis and Gordon Martinson saw 3 EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES in Breckenridge, Wilkin County, on August 29 near the United Methodist Church at 910 Main Street.
