This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, October 25, 2007 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Typical fall weather has predominated this week, with no deep low temperatures, nor any really warm days. Migration is proceeding with the waterfowl now coming through. Now is the time to look for those unusual ducks.

The WHITE-WINGED DOVE was seen on October 21 at the home of Marilyn Sanchez 10 miles north of Fergus Falls. As far as I know, that day was the last day the dove was seen but you can call Marilyn at 218-736-6420 for an update and directions.

NORTHERN SHRIKES were reported in Wilkin, Otter Tail, Becker, and Kittson Counties this week.

Jesse Ellis found AMERICAN PIPIT, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, LE CONTE'S SPARROW, and HARRIS'S SPARROW in Wilkin County on October 21.

A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was present at the Marilyn Sanchez home when we were waiting for the WHITE-WINGED DOVE to make an appearance on October 21. Other species seen in Otter Tail County that day included RED-TAILED HAWK, BONAPARTE'S GULL, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, WESTERN MEADOWLARK, BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, and PURPLE FINCH.

In Becker County, Herb Dingmann found a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at Hamden Slough NWR, and BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in the town of Audubon. Also in Becker County, Shelley Steva and I saw AMERICAN TREE SPARROW and BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS. Beau Shroyer reported a MERLIN, and a BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE was seen at the intersection of CR 12 and CR 7.

In Clay County on October 20, Beau Shroyer observed a HORNED GREBE.

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and a RING-NECKED PHEASANT were seen in Mahnomen County on October 21.

Polk County sightings on October 21 included CACKLING GOOSE and SNOW BUNTING at Oak Lake near Erskine.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County reported several NORTHERN SHRIKES on October 20.
