This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, January 29, 2009 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

This has been another cold week, but temperatures have moderated recently, and a near thaw is predicted for the weekend. The cold has resulted in fewer birders getting out, and thus, fewer reports.

An AMERICAN ROBIN and a NORTHERN SHRIKE were seen in northern East Grand Forks, Polk County , on January 28.

Shelley Steva reported a large flock of 500 to 700 SNOW BUNTINGS in Red Lake County two to three miles north of Oklee on January 23. Two LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen among them.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County northwest of Lancaster reported SHARP-TAILED GROUSE dancing already on January 25. Spring must be on the way!

Steven Reynolds saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE near Wannaska in Roseau County on January 27.

Thanks to Larry Wilebski, Shelley Steva, and Steven Reynolds for their reports.
