This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, June 4, 2009 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Spring is slowly inching into the northwest, but somewhat reluctantly, and we wonder if summer will ever come. Cool temperatures and showery weather has kept the soil wet and cold, so not much gardening has happened in our area. Birding has been busy as expected in late May, and interesting species have been seen in spite of the weather. A good warbler migration was experienced last weekend with up to 20 species being seen in a variety of places in the northwest. It is always a shock on June 1 to note that only resident birds seem to be present now - it's as if a curtain comes down on migration!

Brad and Dee Ehlers reported that as of June 3, both MALLARDS and WOOD DUCKS have hatched broods, while the EASTERN BLUEBIRDS fledged on June 1 in Fergus Fall ,Otter Tail County. I located the EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES behind Jean's Plant Place in Perham, and Jim and Charlene Nelson observed a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at Eagle Lake.

Scott Kahan reported from Hamden Slough in Becker County where he saw TRUMPETER SWAN, a variety of ducks, COMMON LOON, GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN, SORA, and MARBLED GODWIT. At Buchl WPA, there were SANDHILL CRANES with colts, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, and PECTORAL SANDPIPER.

Mark Otnes found a CONNECTICUT WARBLER singing at Buffalo River State Park on May 31, and at Felton Prairie he saw a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE.

Maggie Anderson reported a SCARLET TANAGER at her home in Thief River Falls in Pennington County on May 28. She also saw a late ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK along CR 3 southwest of Thief River Falls.

At Agassiz NWR on May 30, Dan and Barb Williams and I found a SNOWY PLOVER at Parker Pool. The next day I was unable to relocate the bird, nor the other several hundred shorebirds which had been feeding with it. A cold , windy day obviously moved the birds on. On May 30 up to 20 species of warblers were seen at the headquarters at the refuge . Maggie Anderson reported that a SCARLET TANAGER has been at the headquarters all week.

Mary Lou Marchand in Bemidji, Beltrami County reported on May 26 that she observed RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, BROWN THRASHER, SCARLET TANAGER, and INDIGO BUNTING at her feeder on May 26. Shawn Conrad and Dedrick Benz, while doing a big day in Beltrami County, found a WHIMBREL at Black Duck wastewater treatment ponds, an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, and a BAY-BREASTED WARBLER among their sightings in the county.

Beth Siverhus reported LEAST FLYCATCHER, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, and GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER in Roseau County on May 28.

Thanks to Beth Siverhus, Brad and Dee Ehlers, Dan and Barb Williams, Jim and Charlene Nelson, Maggie Anderson , Mark Otnes, Mary Lou Marchand, Scott Kahan, Shawn Conrad, and Dedrick Benz for their reports.
