This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, December 3, 2009 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

The pleasant weather this past week has not made birding very fruitful in the northwest, but all that may be about to change as winter weather and snow have moved in. Feeders are expected to be much busier now that snow has arrived. A light blanket of the white stuff covers the lawns and fields, and the roads are slick with patchy ice.

In Becker County, Beau Shroyer saw two COMMON LOONS and about 200 COMMON GOLDENEYE on Lake Detroit on November 30.

I have a report from Dave Schaum of Osage that he saw an IBIS species in a pond 4 miles south of Hawley in Clay County on November 27. Bob O'Connor checked it out today, but due to the arrival of the cold weather, the bird was no longer there.

Sandy Aubol in western Polk County reported a GREAT HORNED OWL on November 27. A NORTHERN SHRIKE visited her yard in East Grand Forks. On November 29, in the yard she saw a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK and a MOURNING DOVE. An immature BALD EAGLE flew over on November 30 and two COMMON REDPOLLS appeared on December 1 with the snow.

Beth Siverhus saw 50 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE in a harvested grain field in Roseau County on November 27. Location was west of MN 89 about 2 miles south of Wannaska.

Thanks to Beau Shroyer, Beth Siverhus, Dave Schaum, and Beth Siverhus for their reports.
