This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, December 30, 2010 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

As the old year winds down, we are experiencing a taste of the Arctic tonight with strong winds and very cold temperatures with blowing snow. We hope the weather will settle enough so that it doesn't disturb the upcoming weekend events.

Bryan Newman reported a SNOWY OWL on Christmas Day near the intersection of CR 178 and CR 165 in Wilkin County. The bird was flying away to the south rapidly. It should also be noted that CR 178 is not shown to intersect with CR 165 except maybe via a minimum maintenance road. However, since the bird was flying away, it probably is not in that location west of Rothsay now.Other species seen in the area included a RING-NECKED PHEASANT, a GREAT HORNED OWL, many SNOW BUNTINGS, and a RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD.

Beth Siverhus reported an AMERICAN ROBIN in Warroad in Roseau County on December 29.

Thanks to Beth Siverhus and Bryan Newman for their reports. If you went on any CBC's in the northwest in the past week or so, please send in your best sightings.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than Thursday each week, at ajjoppru@q.com OR call the Detroit Lakes Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, January 6, 2011.
