This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, August 30, 2012 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. This has been a rather hot week in the northwest, but the acorns have started falling and some yellow leaves are appearing, so fall must be on the way. Due to the heat, not many migrants are being seen. The heat has also dried up the potholes, so there are fewer places to view shorebirds or waterfowl. Pat DeWenter drove the Pitt Grade on the east side of the Beltrami Island State Forest in Lake of the Woods County on August 30, where she observed OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, and three WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS . In Kittson County, Larry Wilebski reported a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH on August 25. From Agassiz NWR in Marshall County, Lynda Knutsen reported GREAT EGRETS on August 30. Sandy Aubol saw a PHILADELPHIA VIREO in East Grand Forks, Polk County on August 26. On the 27th, she observed RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and NASHVILLE WARBLER. RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, WILSON'S WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER were seen there on August 29. Cleone Stewart saw a BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE at her home in Becker County close to the Otter Tail County line on August 26. Marshall Howe at Dorset in Hubbard County on August 29 saw BLUE-HEADED VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, and 50 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS . RED CROSSBILLS were heard on August 19. In Wadena County on August 23 on a canoe trip, he found 36 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS and four singing YELLOW-THROATED VIREOS along a stretch of the Shell and Crow Wing rivers. John Ellis found an UPLAND SANDPIPER on August 24 in northern Douglas County. Thanks to Cleone Stewart, John Ellis, Larry Wilebski, Lynda Knutsen, Marshall Howe, Pat DeWenter, and Sandy Aubol for their reports.
