This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, November 22, 2012 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. Birding has been good this week in northwest Minnesota. In particular Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann made a swing through the area on the weekend and reported PINE GROSBEAKS in 11 of the 12 counties they birded in. These birds are appearing everywhere seemingly and can be found in almost every town that has crabapple trees or trees with seeds. The only county that Ron and Herb did not find the grosbeaks was Norman, surprisingly. I assume they just weren't at the right place at the right time. Marshall Howe reported NORTHERN SHRIKE and EVENING GROSBEAK in Hubbard County on November 16. SNOW BUNTINGS were in Dorset on November 18, and 25 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen at Park Rapids. Other species seen in Hubbard County this week included RUFFED GROUSE, and PINE GROSBEAKS near Dorset. In Becker County, Steve Midthune reported RED CROSSBILLS on November 19 on the Blackbird Auto Tour at Tamarac NWR. On November 19 also, Beau Shroyer saw 40 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Detroit Lakes. Steve Midthune saw SNOW BUNTINGS were seen on the north end of Hamden Slough NWR along CR 13 about 2.3 miles south of CR 14. Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann reported CACKLING GEESE and WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS on Boyer Lake west of Detroit Lakes on November 22. A COMMON LOON was seen on Tuleby Lake on November 16. EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES, NORTHERN SHRIKES, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, and CEDAR WAXWINGS were seen in Detroit Lakes this week. Clay County sightings by Ron and Herb included TUNDRA SWANS, and in Ulen, EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE. Norman County sightings included EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE, a juvenile YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, and CEDAR WAXWINGS in Twin Valley. In Mahnomen County there was an AMERICAN ROBIN, RED CROSSBILLS along MN 113 east of Waubun, and an EVENING GROSBEAK in Waubun. Sandy Aubol reported 4 PINE GROSBEAKS, two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS and two GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS in East Grand Forks, Polk County on November 16. RED CROSSBILLS were reported by East Grand Forks birders at 5th Ave north in East Grand Forks on November 18. Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann found NORTHERN SHRIKE in Polk County also on November 16. Red Lake County sightings on the weekend included CACKLING GOOSE, GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN in the eastern edge of the county, and both BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS and CEDAR WAXWINGS in Red Lake Falls. Maggie Anderson reported PINE GROSBEAKS at her feeders in Thief River Falls, Pennington County, on November 16 along with COMMON REDPOLLS. Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann reported RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, and COMMON REDPOLLS in St. Hilaire on November 17. I have a secondhand report of two SNOWY OWLS found on November 21, northwest of Argyle in Marshall County. At Agassiz NWR, sightings included ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, NORTHERN SHRIKE, AMERICAN ROBIN, PINE GROSBEAK, and HOARY REDPOLL on November 17. RED CROSSBILLS and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen at the Silver Creek cemetery along CR 12. Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann saw a RUFFED GROUSE at Larry Wilebski's cabin, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK along CR 4 east of Lancaster, AMERICAN KESTREL, MERLIN, and NORTHERN SHRIKE, all in Kittson County. BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were found in Lancaster, and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD 16 miles east of Lancaster. One PINE SISKIN was seen in the county. Thanks to Beau Shroyer, Maggie Anderson, Marshall Howe, Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann, Sandy Aubol, and Steve Midthune for their reports.
