This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, August 22, 2013 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. Migration appears to have barely started here in the northwest, or for that matter in most areas. Birds are hard to find and only the residents are being reported. A few migrant warblers are being reported from the Red River Valley on both sides of the border between North Dakota and Minnesota. RED-TAILED HAWKS seem to be on every pole lately, a testament to a successful nesting season. Jennifer Audette reported WILD TURKEYS along 145th Ave. near Viking in Marshall County. From Polk County, Sandy Aubol reported FRANKLIN'S GULLS and a COMMON NIGHTHAWK in East Grand Forks on August 15. Alma Ronningen in Dent , Otter Tail County, has a good mix of birds in her yard including YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, HOUSE WREN, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, GRAY CATBIRD, AMERICAN REDSTART, YELLOW WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, and PURPLE FINCH. Elsewhere in the county, she reported OSPREYS with two young, SANDHILL CRANES with one colt, and two pairs of TRUMPETER SWANS with cygnets at Maplewood State Park. Thanks to Jennifer Audette, Sandy Aubol, and Alma Ronningen for their reports. Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than Thursday each week, at ajjoppru@mncable.net OR call the Detroit Lakes Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992.
