Migration appears to be nearly over, and now is the season to spot those late or lost migrants. Snow covers the ground over much of the area, and for the rest, ice is closing in on the lakes and rivers.
Marshall Howe sent in a report from Dorset in Hubbard County where he saw about 300 COMMON REDPOLLS, one AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, and a BROWN CREEPER on November 26.
From Hamden Slough in Becker County, Steve Midthune reported small flocks of LAPLAND LONGSPURS, COMMON REDPOLLS, and SNOW BUNTINGS on November 21. Thirty-five GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS were seen and a few late RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS and RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were still around on November 21. Kay Hartness reported two RUSTY BLACKBIRDS at her feeders in Detroit lakes on November 25.
At the East Grand Forks WTP in Polk County on November 21, Matthew Spoor reported a RING-BILLED GULL, 100 AMERICAN CROWS, about 200 MALLARDS, one CANADA GOOSE, and four BALD EAGLES. Doubtless, most have left by now as the cold settled in and the water disappeared under the ice. Sandy Aubol observer a late CHIPPING SPARROW at her feeder in East Grand Forks on November 22.
Tom Ballard heard two GREAT HORNED OWLS hooting and answering each other a few miles southeast of Thief River Falls, Pennington County, last weekend. Today, November 26, I saw a BALD EAGLE soaring over the city of Thief River Falls.
