This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, May 10, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Although the migration in and around Duluth has been described by most observers as relatively slow during the past week, several birds of interest did turn up; these included RED-THROATED LOONS, LITTLE GULL, WHIMBREL, WILLETS, RUDDY DUCK, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD and EASTERN TOWHEE.

Between 10 and 13 Red-throated Loons were reported at Park Point yesterday, the 9th, on the lake side of the Point between 31st St and Sky Harbor Airport. Today at least 6 of these loons were still present on the lake between 22nd St and the Recreation Area.

However, no one reported being able to relocate the Little Gull found yesterday afternoon by Peder Svingen at Park Point; the gull was an adult near Hearding Island with about 300 BONAPARTE'S GULLS seen from the end of 19th St. At least 1,000 Bonaparte's -- possibly as many as 2,000 -- had been noted at Park Point on May 8.

Kate Nicoletti found a lone Whimbrel today along the Sky Harbor Airport runway; also at Park Point 4-5 Willets were present yesterday at the Recreation Area.

A Ruddy Duck was reported by Christine Mansfield May 3 at the 40th Ave West Erie Pier area.

Uwe Kausch saw a N Mockingbird in his yard May 5-7, but no one else has been able to relocate it and apparently the bird is now gone. Uwe welcomes birders to his yard which is at the far W end of Wildwood Rd, which turns W off Homestead Rd 1.2 mi N of Hwy 61.

Sharon Lind observed an E Towhee May 4-5 in Two Harbors on the 400 block of 2nd Ave; it is not known if it might still be in the area.

And there was an unconfirmed report May 7 of 9 STILT SANDPIPERS along the Lakewalk, which would be an unusual location for this species.

Finally, a reminder that the annual Hawk Ridge Birdathon and St Louis County Big Day will take place on Saturday, May 19. Terry Wiens is again organizing this event, and for more information about joining one of the teams or making a pledge give Terry a call at 525-6158. Birding teams have been soliciting pledges based on the number of birds they find on the 19th, with all the proceeds for the benefit of Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve. There will also be a compilation potluck brunch starting at 9 AM on Sunday, May 20, at the Lakewood Community Center at the corner of Strand and N Tischer Rds, and all are welcome whether or not they were out birding on Saturday.

Unless something unusual is seen in the meantime which needs to be reported immediately, this Report is normally updated once a week on Thursdays, so that the next scheduled update will be on May 17; there may also be another update on the 18th with birding information which would be of interest to the Birdathon teams.

The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 525-5952, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape. Messages can also be left without having to wait for the report to end: to do this, after the tape starts playing push 5 on a touch-tone phone, the tape will stop, the tone will sound, and you can then leave your message.

The Duluth Birding Report is sponsored and funded by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union (MOU) as a service to its members.
