This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, August 2nd, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Though the fall migration has begun, with flocks of EVENING GROSBEAKS and blackbirds moving through town, there has been little birding activity over the past two weeks.

Migrants reported this week include PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD (seen in the harbor), along with some warbler and other songbird movement at night.

A pair of BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS was seen on the east end of the Erie Pier/40th Ave West area on Wednesday, August 1, and PEREGRINE FALCONS are still active hunting in the harbor.

A Northern Bobwhite, surely an escape, was seen on July 27th in front of the 1st Presbyterian Church in downtown Duluth.

It's not too early to begin planning for the annual MOU Hawk Weekend in Duluth, September 14-16. The Friday evening speaker will be David Bird, on the topic, "Technology and Raptors: a double-edged sword," and on Saturday night, Nick Escott will talk about Thunder Cape Bird Observatory. As usual, there will be field trips, hawk-watching, a silent auction, and a banquet. For more information, see www.hawkridge.org or call 218-724-0261).

Unless something unusual is seen in the meantime which needs to be reported immediately, this Report is normally updated once a week on Thursdays, so that the next scheduled update would be on August 9 if there is any birding news; if, however, nothing of note is being seen, the next update would be 2 weeks from now on August 16.

The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 525-5952, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape. Messages can also be left without having to wait for the report to end: to do this, after the tape starts playing push 5 on a touch-tone phone, the tape will stop, the tone will sound, and you can then leave your message.

The Duluth Birding Report is sponsored and funded by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union (MOU) as a service to its members.
