This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, November 29, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Most of the birding news this week and last weekend comes from Cook Co, where there were reports of CATTLE EGRET, HARLEQUIN DUCK, MERLIN, ICELAND GULL, 2 NORTHERN HAWK OWLS, SNOWY OWL, TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE and PINE WARBLER.

Earlier this week there was a second-hand report from the Grand Marais newspaper of a Cattle Egret; the location was only given as a pasture along the Linnell Rd in Colville, which is east of Grand Marais.

An ad male Harlequin Duck was found Nov 24 at Paradise Beach, 13 miles east of Grand Marais. There were also additional sightings during the weekend from the Grand Marais area of WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, SURF SCOTERS and LONG-TAILED DUCKS.

A late Merlin was still present in Grand Marias last weekend, as was a Snowy Owl (which was weakened from starvation and taken to The Raptor Center in St Paul for rehabilitation), a juv/1st-winter Iceland Gull (which has been present here for a month), and a Townsend's Solitaire in the campground west of the harbor.

Two N Hawk Owls were seen today up the Gunflint Trail. One of these, which had been seen earlier this fall, was relocated along the S Gunflint Lake Rd near the Gunflint Pines Resort, 43 mi N of Grand Marais. The other was an apparently new individual found along the Gunflint at the Tucker Lake Rd, 39 mi N of Grand Marais.

And very late was the Pine Warbler seen Nov 23 at the entrance to Grand Portage State Park.

Closer to Duluth, another imm ICELAND GULL was found Nov 22 in the harbor at Two Harbors in Lake Co, and on the 25th there was a GLAUCOUS GULL, along with 3 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, at the Superior Entry breakwaters at the S tip of Park Point in Duluth. On Nov 24, a 2 SNOWY OWLS were seen in the Duluth harbor area along Garfield Ave near the Port Terminal; another Snowy was seen on the 23rd near mile marker 213 on U S Hwy 2, 6 mi W of Floodwood in St Louis Co. And finally, that ROSS'S GOOSE, which was first reported in early Nov in the Duluth harbor area, was relocated as recently as Nov 26 along Railroad St.

Unless something unusual is seen in the meantime which needs to be reported immediately, this Report is normally updated once a week on Thursdays, so that the next scheduled update will be on December 6. The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 525-5952, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape. Messages can also be left without having to wait for the report to end: to do this, after the tape starts playing push 5, the tape will stop, the tone will sound, and you can then leave your message.

The Duluth Birding Report is sponsored and funded by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union (MOU) as a service to its members.
