This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, August 22nd, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Among the many migrants moving through our area this week were the following unusual species:

On the 18th, Jim and Sharon Lind found a WESTERN TANAGER in fall plumage near the Taconite Harbor boat launch in Cook County. On the same day, they saw a WHIMBREL flying down the shore, also in Cook County.

On the 19th, Jim and Sharon, along with Sally Stout, found a CAROLINA WREN on the lighthouse trail in Two Harbors. The bird has not been seen since.

And, after a full day without finding any rarities, Jim reported a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER at the Two Harbors airport yesterday. Around Minnesota, there have been sightings of many Buff-breasteds over the past few weeks, but this is the first in our area.

Kim Eckert reported a possible BAND-TAILED PIGEON that flew by him as he hiked the Superior Hiking Trail near Silver Bay on the 16th.

There have been several sightings of a GREAT EGRET along the North Shore near Duluth. It isn't known whether all of the them are of the bird that was at Gooseberry Falls last week or not. Most recently, Tim Dawson saw an egret on the Lester River Road today. Tim also reported an adult PEREGRINE FALCON that is often perched on the old Central High Building downtown. Harry Hutchins reported an albino EASTERN PHOEBE on the Munger Trail in Duluth.

It is now less than a month until Hawk Weekend, which will take place this year on September 13-15. Featured speakers this year include Dr. David Bird, and Minnesota's own Steve Wilson. Visitors who are planning to stay in Duluth should make their lodging reservations soon. For more information, see the Hawk Ridge web site: www.hawkridge.org or call Molly Evans at 724-0261.

The next scheduled update of this report will be Thursday, August 29th.

The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 728-5030, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape.
