This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, October 10th, 2002, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Six HARLEQUIN DUCKS, probably the largest group ever seen in Minnesota, have been off Artist's Point in Grand Marais for almost two weeks. I received a report on the 27th, but without contact information. Then, last weekend Kim Eckert's Minnesota Birding Weekend saw the birds again.

Bob Rogers saw a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD on the nature trail past the airport at Park Point on the 6th.

Mike Hendrickson reported one, possibly two, RED-THROATED LOONS on Lake Superior off the Park Point Recreation Area this week. One bird, identified by Peder Svingen, was seen on the 9th, and Mike believes he may have seen a different loon today.

Scott Wolff reported a male SURF SCOTER from the 4100 block of Minnesota Point today. Jim Lind reported a SURF SCOTER and 3 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS from Agate Bay in Two Harbors yesterday, and 4 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS at Knife River on the 7th. Jim also reported three GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE at the Two Harbors Golf Course this week, as well as 2 SANDHILL CRANES on Lake County Road 9, three miles west of the Ford dealership.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, October 17th.

The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 728-5030, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape.
