This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, December 11th, 2003, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Jim Lind reported a SPRUCE GROUSE 1.5 miles north of the Greenwood Lake landing on Lake Cty Rd 2 today. Jim also spotted a GREAT GRAY OWL 2 miles north of the White Pine wayside; and back in Two Harbors, he saw 3 LONG-TAILED DUCKS in Burlington Bay. Sharon Lind saw the PACIFIC LOON there on Monday, but it has not been seen in the past couple of days.

On December 4th, Karl Bardon found 951 HERRING GULLS at the Superior, Wisconsin Landfill, along with 3 GLAUCOUS GULLS and 2 THAYER'S GULLS. A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was still at the Duluth shipping channel on the 5th.

Al Schirmacher reported seeing a GREAT GRAY OWL at the usual spot on Aitkin Cty Rd 18 near Pietz's Rd on the 7th. Laura Erickson had a RUSTY BLACKBIRD in her yard in East Duluth on the 4th.

The Duluth Christmas Bird Count will be held on Saturday, December 20th. People interested in participating should contact Jim Lind at jslind@frontiernet.net.
