This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, April 1, 2004, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Migrant waterfowl have arrived in numbers since last week. Species reported include SNOW GOOSE, CANADA GOOSE, TUNDRA SWAN, GADWALL, AMERICAN WIGEON, BLUE-WINGED TEAL, NORTHERN SHOVELER, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, CANVASBACK, RING-NECKED DUCK, LESSER SCAUP, BUFFLEHEAD, and HOODED MERGANSER.

The West Skyline Hawkwatch concluded a productive month of March. Monthly totals included 4 TURKEY VULTURES, 2753 BALD EAGLES, 4 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 21 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 7 COOPER'S HAWKS, 13 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 361 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 36 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 98 GOLDEN EAGLES, 1 AMERICAN KESTREL, and 1 PEREGRINE FALCON.

Some other new migrants arrived in northeastern Minnesota this week: Tom Jones reported EASTERN BLUEBIRDS near Aitkin on the 25th, Bill Maier saw a BROWN CREEPER on the 26th, and Rick Schroeder saw the first OSPREY of the season near the Cloquet River in Saginaw on the 28th. MERLINS were seen at several locations in Duluth on the 29th.

Bill Lane has heard four owl species on his Northeastern Minnesota owl surveys, including 2 BOREAL OWLS, 10 NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS, 14 BARRED OWLS, and 2 GREAT HORNED OWLS.
