This is the Duluth Birding Report for Sunday, May 22nd, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union. The report is being updated today to report on yesterday's Hawk Ridge Birdathon.

A composite total of 190 species was found in St. Louis County, including 147 within the city limits of Duluth. The winning team of Dave Alexander, Karen Sussman, and Ben, Joshua, and Peter Yokel found 134 species.

Some highlights from the birdathon include:

Two TRUMPETER SWANS at the Embarrass rice paddies, a RED-THROATED LOON out from the airport at Park Point, a flyover RED-SHOULDERED HAWK near Brimson, a HUDSONIAN GODWIT at Morgan Park, six MARBLED GODWITS at Interstate Island, WILSON'S and RED-NECKED PHALAROPE at the Meadowlands sewage lagoons, a GREAT GRAY OWL in the Sax-Zim bog along CR 52, a half mile west of the Stickney Road, a LONG-EARED OWL at Park Point, a NORTHERN HAWK OWL near Brimson, BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on the Admiral Road (CR 788) in the Sax-Zim bog, nesting RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS in Fond du Lac, a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD on Bayhill Drive, off 74th Avenue West, an EASTERN TOWHEE at Magney- Snively park, a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW near Grassy Point, and YELLOW- HEADED BLACKBIRD at Mud Lake in west Duluth.

Also seen in Lake County yesterday was a LITTLE BLUE HERON at the Two Harbors municipal airport, LONG-TAILED DUCKS at Burlington Bay in Two Harbors, a late ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at the Castle Danger sewage lagoons, and a WHIMBREL at Knife River.
