This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, September 13th, 2007 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

An adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was found by Mike Hendrickson and others during a Lake Superior boat trip on the 8th, on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry. They also found a dark morph juvenile PARASITIC JAEGER in Wisconsin waters, about two miles east of Gull Bluff, and a FRANKLIN'S GULL that flew to the Minnesota side of the entry.

Shawn Zierman found two BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS on the 9th at the Morgan Park mudflats in west Duluth. He relocated them on the 12th, along with a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE. Kim Eckert found three LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and five other shorebird species on the 13th at the 40th Avenue West Erie Pier area. Kim also found a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW on the 8th. Jan Green found a CACKLING GOOSE at the Two Harbors golf course on the 13th.

Several species of interest have been seen at Hawk Ridge during the past week, including more than 2,700 raptors on the 9th, and more than 1,600 on the 7th. The season's first SNOW GEESE were seen on the 8th, CACKLING GEESE and RUSTY BLACKBIRDS on the 9th, and an out-of-range FIELD SPARROW on the 12th. Single BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were observed on the 8th and the 9th, and seven AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were seen on the 8th. Four SANDHILL CRANES were seen on the 8th and five were seen on the 9th. BLUE JAY migration has been heavy during the past week, with more than 4,800 on the 10th, 3,600 on the 12th, and 2,700 on the 8th.

Shawn Conrad found a LARK SPARROW in Itasca County on the 13th, at the DNR headquarters along US Highway 2 in Grand Rapids. Shawn also had a report of three possible EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES coming to a feeder in Grand Rapids. Pam Coy saw a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER on the 5th and 6th in her Itasca County yard on the north shore of Little White Oak Lake. She also saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER on the 8th.
