This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, December 13th, 2007 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Two GREAT GRAY OWLS were recently reported by Mike Hendrickson in the Sax-Zim Bog. One was seen along CR 29, about two miles east of Owl Avenue (CR 202). Another was along CR 47 about a half mile north of Maple Leaf Lake. Doug Kieser and Jim Otto found a GREAT GRAY OWL in Aitkin County on the 10th along CR 18, 3.0 miles east of US Highway 169.

Cliff Miller found an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER in Lake County on the 8th at the White Pines picnic area along CR 2, 2 miles north of Forest Highway 11. Cliff also found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER in the Sax-Zim Bog on the 9th, 0.25 mile from the west end of the Arkola Road (CR 52). Mike Erickson has had a flock of 20 EVENING GROSBEAKS at his feeders for the past two weeks at 5972 North Tischer Road (CR 40) north of Duluth.

The VARIED THRUSH at 226 Ridgewood Road in east Duluth, west of 34th Avenue East between First and Fourth Streets, was still present on the 11th. It has been seen most consistently between 7:00 and 9:00 am under the bird feeder. The VARIED THRUSH north of Chisholm in Angora may still be present, and anyone interested in looking for the bird should contact Laura Erickson at bluejay at lauraerickson.com for directions.

Don Kienholz found a late EASTERN BLUEBIRD on the 13th along Arlington Road, less than a quarter mile south of Arrowhead Road in Duluth. Shawn Zierman found a flock of more than 400 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 9th at the Park Point recreational area in Duluth, and the flock was still present on the 10th. More than 400 COMMON GOLDENEYES are being seen in the shipping canal at Canal Park, as well as a late-lingering GADWALL. Peder Svingen found an adult THAYER'S GULL earlier this week at Canal Park.

Two TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES were seen on the 8th in downtown Two Harbors at 1st Street and South Avenue. A late HARRIS’S SPARROW was seen at 2nd Avenue and 3rd Street on the same day. A late RED-NECKED GREBE was seen at Agate Bay on the 11th. The Inca Dove at 304 2nd Avenue has not been seen since the 5th. Jan Green had a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER at her feeders on the 10th along Old North Shore Drive (CR 290) in Duluth Township.

The Duluth Christmas Bird Count will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2007. The Two Harbors Christmas Bird Count will be held the following day on Sunday, December 16.
