This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, October 30th, 2008 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Two PACIFIC LOONS and a juvenile RED-THROATED LOON were found by Peder Svingen on the 24th on Lake Superior between the Park Point Recreation Area and the Sky Harbor Airport. Another juvenile RED-THROATED LOON was at the Lafayette Square 31st Street access. Mike Hendrickson and Peder saw two adult RED-THROATED LOONS on the 26th between the Recreation Area and the Sky Harbor Airport, a female or immature HARLEQUIN DUCK at Lafayette Square, and an adult THAYER'S GULL on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry. Peder saw a first-cycle GLAUCOUS GULL on the 30th at the mouth of Miller Creek near 27th Avenue West.

Don Kienholz reported a dead SNOWY OWL on the 27th near Garfield Avenue and Railroad Street in the Duluth harbor. A MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD flew by Hawk Ridge on the 27th, and a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was seen on the 26th. Shawn Zierman reported a ROSS’S GOOSE on the 26th at the New Page paper plant along I-35 at Central Avenue in west Duluth.

A female SUMMER TANAGER was seen on the 30th in downtown Two Harbors at 320 2nd Avenue. Bart Anderson saw a male HARLEQUIN DUCK at Agate Bay on the 24th, and the BLACK SCOTER and WHITE-WINGED SCOTER continued to be seen as recently as the 29th. Bart also saw a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE on the 27th at Good Harbor Bay in Cook County, four miles southwest of Grand Marais, and a SMITH’S LONGSPUR on the 26th at the Lutsen sewage ponds. Denny and Barb Martin relocated a HARLEQUIN DUCK on the 26th at the Grand Portage sewage ponds, and they saw a SURF SCOTER at Paradise Beach. LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen at Taconite Harbor on the 25th, and as many as three BLACK SCOTERS were reported in the Grand Marais harbor by several observers.

Earl Orf found two NORTHERN HAWK OWLS on the 29th along the Gunflint Trail (CR 12) in Cook County. The first one was 23 miles north of Grand Marais, just south of the Moose Viewing Area, and the second one was 37.5 miles north of town. An AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was seen briefly on the 26th along the Croftville Road just east of Grand Marais, but it quickly flew off to the east and was not relocated.

Shawn Zierman found at least six BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS and one female AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the 29th in Aitkin County along the east end of the Hedbom Forest Road, west of Floodwood.
