This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, April 15th, 2010 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Three LONG-TAILED DUCKS were found by Ron Erpelding at Taconite Harbor on the 14th. Ron also had 10 waterfowl species at the Grand Portage sewage ponds and three flyover SANDHILL CRANES at Cascade River State Park on the 15th. SANDHILL CRANES continue to be seen almost daily at the West Skyline Hawk Count and Jeff Newman had one fly over his yard in Lakeside on the 9th.

Other highlights from the West Skyline Hawk Count in the past week include the first BROAD-WINGED HAWK of the season on the 14th, a flock of six CACKLING GEESE on the 12th, 132 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS on the 15th, single RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS on the 11th and 14th, and a GOLDEN EAGLE on the 10th.

Recent new arrivals in the area include BARN SWALLOW, SWAMP SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW and BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD.
