This is the Duluth Birding Report for May 31st, 2012 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A flock of at least 20 WHIMBRELS was seen by Jason Caddy on the 28th at Minnesota Point near the Superior Entry. Peder Svingen saw six WHIMBRELS on the 28th on Park Point at the 22nd Street access. Four were seen later in the day at the Recreation Area ball fields. Doug Keiser reported eight RED-THROATED LOONS on the 28th at the Lafayette Square 31st Street access and ten were seen later out from the Recreation Area. Jan and Larry Kraemer saw a flock of 12 BLACK TERNS and eight AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS on the 25th at the Recreation Area.

Sparky Stensaas found a WESTERN MEADOWLARK and a SHARP-TAILED GROUSE on the 28th in the Sax-Zim Bog near the intersection of the Arkola Road (CR 52) and the Stickney Road (CR 207). He also found CONNECTICUT WARBLERS on territory at several locations including the intersection of the Stickney Road and the Sax Road (CR 28).

David Neitzel saw 36 WHIMBRELS on the 26th at Paradise Beach east of Grand Marais in Cook County, as well as a BLACK SCOTER and five LONG-TAILED DUCKS.
