This is the Duluth Birding Report for September 21st, 2012 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The fifth MISSISSIPPI KITE of the season was seen by Karl Bardon and others on the 16th at Hawk Ridge in Duluth. A SWAINSON'S HAWK was banded there on the 15th, and singles flew by on the 15th and 16th. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen on the 16th.

Sparky Stensaas saw a SPRUCE GROUSE in Lake County on the 15th on the Whyte Road, 0.5 mile east of the Stony River Forest Road. Doug Mayo, Craig Mandel and others saw a ROSS'S GOOSE on the 16th at the Two Harbors cemetery. What was probably the same bird was seen on the 21st at the Two Harbors golf course. A MARSH WREN was seen at Agate Bay in Two Harbors on the 17th.
