This is the Duluth Birding Report for March 13th, 2017 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Six GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were found on the 12th at the Grand Marais municipal campground, and John Richardson saw eight on the 7th at Interstate Island in the Duluth harbor. Peder Svingen found a ROSS'S GOOSE in Superior on the 10th at East 9th Street, southeast of 18th Avenue East. Other very early migrating waterfowl to the area in the past two weeks include NORTHERN PINTAILS at several locations in Duluth and up the North Shore, GREATER SCAUP, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, RING-NECKED DUCK, and AMERICAN WIGEON.

The immature male HARLEQUIN DUCK at Agate Bay in Two Harbors was still present on the 12th. The HARLEQUIN DUCK in Grand Marais was last reported on the 6th. The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE at 2nd Avenue and 2nd Street in Two Harbors was last reported the 4th.

Julie Grahn found an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on the 2nd in northern St. Louis County, along the Johnson Road about 7.5 miles east of the town of Cook, MN.

Large flocks of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS have been moving through Duluth and the North Shore recently, including a flock of more than 1,700 found by John Richardson on the 12th along Toledo Street near the College of St. Scholastica.
