This is the Duluth birding report for Thursday, November 16, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists Union.

Big news related to the YELLOW BILLED LOON and its demise, reported previously by Michael Hendrickson.

The CAROLINA WREN at a Duluth feeder is being seen so sporadically, that it is not worth while trying to see it.

The VARIED THRUSH has not been relocated.

The 2 female HARLEQUIN DUCKs reported in main harbor at Two Harbors have also not been relocated and there is some question of their identiy. The LITTLE GULL was seen sporadically during the week on the west and north side of Lake Mille Lacs. There are now several reports of GREAT GRAY OWLs in Aitkin and St. Louis counties, especially in the Saks-Zim bog. NORTHERN HAWK OWLs have been seen in Duluth and in Cook County. SNOWY OWLs have been located at the Port Terminal in Duluth and at Malmo on Lake Mille Lacs. GREAT BLACK BACKED GULL and WHITE WINGED SCOTER have been seen at Canal Park in Duluth. A BLACK SCOTER was seen at Paridise Beach in Cook County

Unless something unusual is seen in the meantime which needs to be reportedon immediately, the next scheduled update of this tape will be on Thursday, November 23. And as always, if you have birds to report, you may either leave a message after the tone or call me [Kim Eckert] directly at 218-525-6930.

Also note for future reference that callers can leave a message if they wish, without having to wait for this birding report to end. To do this, after the tape starts playing, push 5 on your touch-tone phone. The tape will then stop, the tone will sound, and you can then leave your message.
