This is the Duluth birding report for Thursday, September 12, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Prospects for all the birders coming into town this weekend look excellent with the highs in the 60s and generally northern winds although they may be more from the NE rather than the ideal from the NW.

Hawk flight is definitely underway, highlighted by a juvenile Mississippi Kite on Sept 9 and nearly 6000 hawks counted Wednesday. A strong cold front Wednesday with NW winds brought the first real kettles with 4906 BROAD-WINGEDS with a SWAINSON'S HAWK also spotted. The overall total was 5948. Thursday morning more BROAD-WINGEDS were counted. and a PEREGRINE FALCON also seen.

For non-raptors the Lakewood Pumping Station morning count has been relatively uneventful as have the 40th Ave W mudflats. Elsewhere a JAEGER (probably a PARASITIC) was seen by Tom Tustison at the Superior entrance to the harbor. A FRANKLIN'S GULL was seen at Brighton Beach by Terry Wiens. A WHIMBREL was also at Park Point.

Otherwise flocks of migrating species have been seen including AMERICAN PIPETS, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS and CROSSBILLS.

If there are significant new observations to report, this tape will be updated on Sunday, September 15.

Otherwise the next scheduled update of will be on Thursday, September 19, and as usual, if you have birds to report you can leave a message after the tone. BEEP
