This is the Duluth birding report for Thursday, January 29 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Unfortunately several of the birds mentioned on last weeks tape have not been reported since then, namely that unidentified large falcon in the Duluth Harbor, the SPRUCE GROUSE on the Spruce Road in Lake County, the GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL or ICELAND GULL at the Superior Wisconsin landfill, the NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL in Don Kienholz's yard, the BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on County Road 211 in the Sax-Zim Bog and the BOHEMIAN WAXWING at various locations at St Louis County.

On the positive side however, several others from last week were relocated including GREAT GRAY OWLS in the Sax-Zim Bog, SNOWY OWLS in the Duluth Harbor area, both THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS on the Spruce Road in Lake County, SNOW BUNTINGS in the Sax-Zim Bog, RED CROSSBILLS in Lake County, one and possibly two HOARY REDPOLLS at a Duluth feeder and presumably the HARRIS' SPARROWS are still at three Duluth feeders. In addition there were new reports this week of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at two locations and BOREAL CHICKADEES at a Duluth feeder.

As many as three GREAT GRAY OWLS have been seen recently along St. Louis County Road 7 in the Sax-Zim Bog area North West of Duluth. Two of these were seen last weekend between 21/4 and 21/2 miles North of Sax and one of these was seen again there this afternoon, 2 miles North of Sax. The third GREAT GRAY last weekend was on 7 about a 1/4 mile south of County Road 319, or the Stone Lake Road and presumably the same owl was also seen earlier this week as it was last week on 319, which turns east off of 7, 11/2 miles south of Zim.

At least one and probably two SNOWY OWLS are still being seen in the Duluth Harbor area. The most reliable of the two is most often seen on the bay ice between the Port Terminal and the Park Point Recreation Area. Another SNOWY has sometimes been seen this month in the vicinity of the Duluth Convention Center.

Both THREE-TOED and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were relocated last weekend on the Spruce Road, which turns North off of Minnesota Highway 1, 14 miles North West of Lake County Road 2. The THREE-TOED was 4/10ths of a mile up the Spruce Road and the BLACK-BACKED was about a 1/4 mile beyond the plowed end of the road, which is 4 miles from Highway 1.

Flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at two locations in the Sax-Zim Bog area last weekend, one of these was along St. Louis County Road 5, 21/2 miles West and 51/4 miles North of Meadowlands and the other flock was along County Road 52, 2.7 miles east of Toivola.

The only RED CROSSBILLS reported recently have been in the vicinity of Isabella in Lake County, along Minnesota Highway 1 and meanwhile WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS continue to be few and far between with probably the best chance of finding some in the Sax-Zim Bog.

There now seem to be two HOARY REDPOLLS at Judy Gibbs feeder on Park Drive on the East side of Eagle Lake just North of Duluth. Again to reach Eagle Lake, go North on Jean Duluth Road for 8 miles from the corner of Glenwood Street and turn left on Emerson Road.

It is assumed that HARRIS' SPARROWS are still present at three Duluth feeders. That is at Lief Brush's on the 2900 block of Graceland Road, at the Wild Birds Unlimited Store next to the Miller Hill Mall, and at Lisa Messer's feeder on the 2000 block of West 8th Street.

There were sightings of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at two new locations this week. One of these was in Terry Wiens yard which is on Strand Road about a 1/2 west of North Fisher Road and the other was in a yard along Lake County Road 2. 21 miles north of Two Harbors.

And finally, Deb Savageau who lives on the 5700 block of Juniata Street in Duluth, had two BOREAL CHICKADEES at her feeder this morning.

Unless something unusual is seen in the mean time which needs to be reported on immediately the next scheduled update of this tape will be on Thursday February 5th and as always if you have birds to report you may leave a message after the tone.
